Programme

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Sonata in A minor, D.537, Op 164 (Schubert)

i Allegro ma non troppo, ii Allegretto quasi andantino, iii Allegro vivace

Schubert composed this sonata in 1817. The piano sonata is featured in the 1985 film adaptation of E. M. Forster’s A Room with a View, as protagonist Lucy Honeychurch is practicing piano.

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849)

Scherzo No. 4, Op. 54, in E major (Chopin)

The scherzo was published in 1843. Unlike the preceding three scherzi (Op. 20, Op. 31, Op. 39), the E-major is generally calmer in temperament, though it still possesses some exceptionally passionate and dramatic moments.

György Ligeti (1923-2006)

Etude No 16, Book3 “Pour Irina” (Ligeti)

i Andante con espressione, rubato, molto legato, ii Allegro con moto, sempre legato, iii Allegro vivace – Molto vivace

The Hungarian composer György Ligeti composed a cycle of 18 études for solo piano between 1985 and 2001. Etude No 16 has a gentle beginning, becoming more and more frenetic due to the introduction of progressively shorter note-values and additional pitches. The étude is dedicated to Irina Kataeva.

Franz Liszt (1811-1886)

Après une lecture de Dante, Années de Pèlerinage, Second year, Italy, S.161 (Liszt)

Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata (‘After a Reading of Dante’; also known as the Dante Sonata) is a piano sonata in one movement, written by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt in 1849. It was first published in 1856 as part of the second volume of his Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage). This work of program music was inspired by the reading of Victor Hugo’s poem “Après une lecture de Dante” (1836).
