Programme

  • Trio for flute, oboe and clarinet (Harris)

    6 movements

After studies at the Royal Academy of Music and the University of London, Paul Harris has now established an international reputation as one of the UK’s leading educationalists.

He studied the clarinet with Professor John Davies, winning the August Manns Prize for outstanding performance, composition with Timothy Baxter and conducting with Maurice Miles. He then went on to study music education at the University of London where he was a pupil of Professor Keith Swanwick.

  • 1903-1975

Divertimento für vier Holzbläser, Op. 38 (Blacher)

This work was composed for and premiered by the Tailleferre Ensemble by Dana Joras. Spring Blooms is a duet for flute and oboe. The piece is made up of four short melodic movements inspired by flowers that bloom in the spring.

  • Travel Notes 2 (Bennett)

    i In an air-balloon, ii In a helicopter, iii In a bath-chair, iv Car-chase

In his Travel Notes Bennett takes us on a journey in the air and on the ground, reflected by the mood and titles of the four movements of the suite – In an air-balloon, In a helicopter, In a bath-chair and Car-chase. A master of film music, Bennett knows exactly how to paint a vivid image or scene solely with the help of instruments.

  • Be Still My Soul (Larson)

Based on the hymn by the same name, which was itself based on the chorale melody from ‘Finlandia’ by Jean Sebelius. This written as a flute solo.

  • Motion (Morris)

Quartet for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. Motion (2010) is a four movement work that focuses on four different “motions.” Movements include: Bike Ride, Stretch, Tip Toe, and Strut. Commissioned by Arizona State University’s faculty woodwind quartet. Premiered in 2010.
