Eva Maria Doroszkowska

Programme

Winter Moods: A narrative of musical sketches capturing winter landscapes; from the northern vistas of Grieg’s native fjords to the snowy forests of Baltic Lithuania and Latvia. This programme fills the mind with the wonder of winter – that barren darkness that gives birth to storytelling reflecting “ the life of the crystal, the architect of the snowflake , the fire of the frost and the soul of the sunbeam” . A programme of saga and soul for a January afternoon where in winter the earth listens in and sounds are sharper.

  • 1843-1907

    Moods, Op. 73 (Grieg)

  • 1902-1977

    Four Preludes (Garūta)

    No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4

Four Preludes composed over two decades earlier owe a debt to (early and mid-period) Scriabin, each rising to an ecstatic climax, all of them impassioned and, once more, very loud. Follow the link for Eva Doroszkowska exploring the pieces with insightful commentary.

  • 1904-1972

    Winter Sketches (Dvarionas)

i First snowflakes, ii Down the hill on a sleigh, iii The snow-covered forest, iv Snowman’s brooding, v In the skating rink, vi Little birds in winter, vii The New Year

Balys Dvarionas was a Soviet and Lithuanian composer, pianist, conductor, and educator. Dvarionas first became known as a composer after World War II. His works are in a romantic vein, with roots in folk song.
