  • Cello Sonata in D minor, Op. 40 (Shostakovich)

i Allegro non troppo, ii Allegro, iii Largo, iv Allegro

The Cello Sonata in D minor was composed in 1934. It was a period of emotional turmoil in Shostakovich’s life, as he had fallen in love with a young student at a Leningrad festival featuring his Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District. Their affair resulted in a brief separation from his wife Nina; during which he composed the Cello Sonata.By late 1934 Shostakovich and Nina reunited and she eventually became pregnant with their first-born daughter, who was born in 1936.

  • 1879-1962

    The Holy Boy (Ireland)

The Holy Boy is a short composition by the English composer John Ireland. Alongside his setting of the hymn “My Song Is Love Unknown”, it is probably his best-known work. The original version is from Christmas 1913, and was published in 1915 as The Holy Boy – A Carol, the third item in his four Preludes for Piano.

  • 1879-1962

    Spring Sorrow (Ireland)

A major theme of this poem is the advent of spring, with the hawthorn buds “quickening” and the snows of winter beginning to melt. The birds are singing again. However, the poet is metaphorically related to the budding hawthorn hedge where his “heart puts forth its pain.”

  • Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 19 (Rachmaninov)

i Lento – Allegro moderato, ii Allegro scherzando, iii Andante, iv Allegro mosso

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Sonata in G minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 19 was completed in November 1901 and published a year later. He regarded the role of the piano as not just an accompaniment but equal to the cello. Most of the themes are introduced by the piano, while they are embellished and expanded in the cello’s part.

  • 1782–1840

    Variations on One String (Paganini)

Niccolò Paganini’s “Variations on One String on a Theme by Rossini” (often titled Moses Fantasy or Introduction & Variations on ‘Dal tuo stellato soglio’) is a virtuoso piece composed around 1818-1819, based on the aria from Rossini’s opera Mosè in Egitto. Originally for violin, it requires playing on the G string only.
