Programme

  • 1862-1918

Piano Trio in G major, L. 5 (Debussy)

i Andantino con moto allegro, ii Scherzo: Moderato con allegro, iii Andante espressivo, iv Finale: Appassionato

The Piano Trio was written by an 18-year-old Claude Debussy in 1880 in Fiesole, Italy. Most of the autograph of the work was thought to be lost until 1982, when it was discovered from the legacy of Maurice Dumesnil, a pupil of Debussy’s.

It is clear from this music that the great composer’s style was as yet unformed, although there are certainly foretastes of the kind of writing found in the piano Suite bergamasque of a decade later.

  • Piano Trio, Op. 50 (Tchaikovsky)

i Pezzo elegiaco (Moderato assai – Allegro giusto), ii (A) Tema con variazioni: Andante con moto – (B) Variazione finale e coda

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Trio in A minor, Op. 50, was written in Rome between December 1881 and late January 1882. It is subtitled À la mémoire d’un grand artiste [In memory of a great artist], in reference to Nikolai Rubinstein, his close friend and mentor, who had died on 23 March 1881.

The Pezzo elegiaco is a darkly brooding and rather conventional romantic first movement with a beautiful opening cello solo with a theme that returns for a final funeral march.

The second movement is rather more unusual: it opens with an almost classical melody, much like Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for cello, and then proceeds with an assured set of variations, also like the Rococo Variations. After working itself into more and more ecstatic heights culminating with the final variation, it suddenly goes through a surprising modulation to the original minor key, and the theme from the first movement returns with an even greater gravity, and the entire piece concludes with yet another death march.
