Programme

  • 1824-1910

    Sonata ‘Undine’, Op. 167 (Reinecke)

i Allegro, ii Intermezzo – Allegro vivace, iii Andante tranquillo, iv Finale: Allegro molto agitato ed appassionato, quasi presto

Sonata Undine in E minor is a flute and piano sonata written by Carl Reinecke, arranged here for clarinet and piano, that is based on the novel Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué. It was first published in 1882. Undine is a fairytale novella (Erzählung) by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué in which Undine, a water spirit, marries a knight named Huldbrand in order to gain a soul.

  • 1810-1856

    Fantasiestucke, Op.73 (Schumann)

i Zart und mit Ausdruck (Tender and with expression), ii Lebhaft, leicht (Lively, light), iii Rasch und mit Feuer (Quick and with fire)

Robert Schumann wrote the pieces over just two days in February 1849, and originally entitled them “Soirée Pieces” before settling on the title Fantasiestücke. The title is one Schumann was fond of, using it in several works. It promotes the fundamental Romantic notion that creative expression is the product of the artist’s unrestricted imagination. In addition, the connotations of “fantasy” justify the sudden mood changes.

  • 1883-1897

Clarinet Sonata No. 2, Op. 120 (Brahms)

i Allegro amabile, ii Allegro appassionato, iii Andante con moto

Clarinet Sonatas 1 and 2 were written in 1894 and are dedicated to the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. The sonatas stem from a period late in Brahms’s life where he discovered the beauty of the sound and tonal colour of the clarinet. The form of the clarinet sonata was largely undeveloped when Brahms wrote his. These were the last chamber pieces Brahms wrote before his death and are considered two of the great masterpieces in the clarinet repertoire.
