Programme

  • Bardenklänge, Op.13 No. 5 (Mertz)

    Fingals Höhle

This work is from Mertz’s Bardenklänge (Bardic Sounds), Op.13 collection. Mertz was very influenced by the great composers of his day, in particular, Liszt, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Schumann firmly placing him as a prominent Romantic era composer for guitar.

  • Le Gondolier, Op. 65 No. 3 (Mertz)

Johann Kaspar Mertz was a prominent Austro-Hungarian guitarist and composer of the early Romantic period. Renowned as a virtuoso, he was appointed court guitarist to Empress Karoline Auguste

  • Tarantella, Op. 87a (Castelnuovo-Tedesco)

Composed in 1936. Tarantella is a dance originated in Southern Italy’s Puglia region during the Middle Ages — this lively dance was once believed to cure “tarantism,” a trance-like state said to be caused by the bite of the local wolf spider.

  • 1860-1909

España, Op. 165 No. 5 (Albéniz)

    Capricho catalan

“Capricho Catalán” is the fifth piece in Isaac Albéniz’s “España: 6 Hojas de Álbum,” Op. 165, composed around 1890. Originally written for piano, this expressive, short piece is frequently performed on classical guitar, featuring a lyrical, cantabile melody over a rhythmic, castanet-like accompaniment, often highlighting cante jondo-style interludes.

  • 1902–1983

Bagatelle No. 3: “Alla Cubana” (Walton)

    Alla Cubana

Five Bagatelles for Guitar by English composer Sir William Walton (1902-1983) were written for Julian Bream and dedicated to Malcolm Arnold “with admiration and affection for his 50th birthday.” Alla Cubana, uses the syncopated rhythms often found in Latin-American music.

  • Suite populaire brésilienne (Villa-Lobos)

    i Mazurka-Chôro, ii Scottish-Chôro

The creative process of Suite populaire brésilienne took many years, as the different movements that make up the suite were never conceived to be put together. All pieces in this suite have a certain sentimental and melancholic tone (the word chôro comes from the Portuguese term chorar, which means “to cry” or “to complain”). In this sense, as other typical choros, all dances have a generally steady tempo and follow the typical rondo form pattern where the first phrase is repeated.

  • 1885-1944

    La catedral (Barrios)

i Preludio (Saudade), ii Andante religioso, iii Allegro solemne

La Catedral is one of the most celebrated and technically challenging pieces ever written for classical guitar. Composed by the Paraguayan virtuoso Agustín Barrios Mangoré in 1921, this iconic piece is deeply rooted in Barrios’ spirituality and his connection to the sounds of the church. Over the years, La Catedral has become a staple in the classical guitar repertoire and a favorite among performers and listeners alike.

  • 1921-1992

    Cinco piezas (Piazzolla)

    ii Romantico, iii Acentuado

Two of the five Cinco Piezas, composed by Piazzolla in 1980
