Programme

  • Nouvelles Suites de Pièce de Clavecin Suite in G Major, RCT 6 (Rameau)

    vi Les Sauvages, vii E’Egyptienne

The French Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau wrote three books of Pièces de clavecin for the harpsichord. These two pieces are from the second suite of the third book.

  • Piano Sonata No. 8, Op. 13 ‘Sonata Pathétique’ (Beethoven)

i Grave – Allegro di molto e con brio, ii Agagio cantabile, iii Rondo: Allegro

Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when Beethoven was 27 years old and was published in 1799. It has remained one of his most celebrated compositions and he dedicated the work to his friend Prince Karl von Lichnowsky. Although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named Grande sonate pathétique (to Beethoven’s liking) by the publisher, who was impressed by the sonata’s tragic sonorities.

  • Waltz in E Minor (Chopin)

The Waltz in E minor is a waltz for solo piano by Frédéric Chopin. It was composed circa 1830 and published posthumously in May 1851.

  • Valse in A-flat major, Op. 38 (Scriabin)

Alexander Scriabin’s Waltz in A-flat major, Op. 38 is a captivating and romantic piano piece composed around 1903.

  • 1875 – 1937

    La Valse (Ravel)

La valse, a choreographic poem for orchestra, is a work written by Maurice Ravel between February 1919 and 1920; it was first performed on 12 December 1920 in Paris. It was conceived as a ballet but is now more often heard as a concert work. Apart from the two-piano arrangement, which was first publicly performed by Ravel and Alfredo Casella, Ravel also transcribed this work for one piano. The solo piano transcription is infrequently performed due to its difficulty. Lucien Garban produced a transcription for piano four hands in 1920.
