Notes

Haydn’s String Quartet in B flat major, Op. 76 No. 4, is nicknamed “Sunrise” due to its opening movement, where the first violin ascends over sustained chords, creating a sunrise-like effect. This quartet was completed in 1797 and is the fourth in Haydn’s final set of six quartets. The opening movement also features contrasting ideas and orchestral-style tutti sections.
