  • 1906-1975

    Eight preludes Op. 34 (Shostakovitch)

    The 24 Preludes, Op. 34 is a set of short piano pieces composed by Shostakovich in 1933. They are arranged following the circle of fifths, with one prelude in each major and minor key. We will hear 8 arranged for flute, cor anglais and bassoon.

    Alan Richardson composed this Aria for oboe and piano in 1965.

    Idylle for Flute and Piano, Op. 21 (Coleridge-Taylor)

    Idylle is an unabashedly romantic chamber piece written in 1920 by Avril Coleridge-Taylor, daughter of Samuel.

    Syrinx, L. 129 (Debussy)

    Debussy’s Syrinx is based on the mythological story of Pan, a Greek satyr known for falling in love with the nymph Syrinx and credited with the invention of a musical instrument called pan flute, panpipes or syrinx, in memory of the homonymous nymph who lost her life as she was trying to run away from Pan’s unwanted courtship.

    Six Metamorphosis after Ovid, Op. 49 (Britten)
    i Pan, ii Phaeton, iii Niobe, iv Bacchus, v Narcissus, vi Arethusa

    Six Metamorphoses is based on the epic poem Metamorphoses by the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso. The piece is composed of six movements, each drawing from a single narrative of Ovid’s poem.

    Sixteen Waltzes is a set of 16 short waltzes for piano written by Johannes Brahms. They were composed in 1865, and published in 1866, dedicated to the music critic Eduard Hanslick. The Galliard Trio perform this arranged for flute, oboe and piano.

    The Galliard Trio has been performing for over 40 years. Since its first appearance in 1981 it has been playing in music clubs, stately homes, churches, schools and arts centres throughout southern England.

Key information for concert goers

When

Every Thursday at 12:45pm (except August & over Christmas). Performances last around 60 minutes. Please enter quietly as there is a noon service in the Lady Chapel.

How much?

Entry is £7 per adult (card or cash), under 18s and carers are free. The price includes a programme. Donations are welcomed to subsidise the larger ensembles.

No, just turn up. Doors open at 12:15 pm. Make sure you arrive in good time to get a seat.
